Shawn Harper – Beginning at the Bottom
Just a little background here for you: Shawn was born in 1968. He grew up on the south side of Columbus, Ohio. Specialists diagnosed Shawn with four different learning disabilities. However, his amazing mom realized he needed some positive male role models in his life. Before his father left the scene, he had abused Shawn and had even thrown him down the stairs. Moreover, his grades were poor and his peers ridiculed him constantly. His mother insisted that he get involved in sports; football, to be exact. Incidentally, Shawn didn’t want to play football; but mom won out because she wanted him to see what real men could be. Consequently, his coaches were the role models he had so badly needed. Shawn definitely needed some positive influence from the men around him. Those men filled the void in his life.
Finding the Life Meant for Him
Shawn was able to get into North Iowa Area Community College. By 1992, the NFL drafted Shawn in Round 4. Moreover, he played for the Los Angeles Rams from 1992. He went on to play for the Houston Oilers, the Indianapolis Colts and spent three years in Europe with the Amsterdam Admirals and the Frankfurt Galaxy. Obviously, he learned to play football, just like his mother had hoped.
Shawn bought into his brother’s company; a huge turning point in his life, because his father was suddenly back in his life. Eventually, they down-sized the father’s job, so Shawn came on to help the brothers with their business. Eventually, Shawn bought out the company but kept his dad on. Therefore, for twenty years, Shawn and his dad actually worked together. Dad only missed a couple of days during those years together. Finally, Dad had Shawn’s back at least some of the time. However, there was still plenty of stress between the two men. His dad apparently tried to make up for some of his mistakes of the past years.
Shawn and the Winning Handshake
Over the years, Shawn’s dad taught him how to do a proper handshake! The rule was to never turn your hand downward; if you do, you are giving control to the other person! The day before his father died of kidney failure, they shook hands in the hospital. His father turned his own hand downward to indicate that it was now Shawn’s turn! Incidentally, I heard that story during an interview over the radio and it still gives me goosebumps!
Shawn Harper – the WINologist!
Since 2007, Shawn has been active in the leadership of The Salvation Army and their charities. He has spoken at many of their activities; to challenge their people. His public speaking career has now gone worldwide. As expected, he uses many of the principals he learned while playing football in everyday life. He shares the fact that often, we are not disabled; but rather, we are uniquely enabled! Embrace who you are; you are unique and have a particular God-given plan and purpose. Shawn teaches people how to win at life. Therefore, Shawn is often called the “WINologist! By the way, he is available to speak to groups.
